Rifle

This morning there was no call from the team. I tried to call them, but their satellite phones seemed switched off. In the evening I tried again, but it was not successful.

18 years old and above are permitted to use rifles for hunting purposes. In the Inuit society a boy is considered to attain manhood when he succeeds in hunting for the first time in his life. Hunting of polar bears is restricted. One hunter is allowed to hunt one polar bear per year. Here in Resolute Bay 35 polar bears can be hunted in a year.

A rifle and its bullets are to be kept safe in separate places. Bullets can be purchased at the CO-OP.

I intend to accompany polar bear or seal hunting trips if there is a chance. But I will only be observing the event.

The rifle introduced in the above photos is owned by Martha the chef of the hotel. Martha is one of the Inuit women who have the hunting license.
